SHILLONG: The State Congress’s women’s wing on Wednesday came out in support of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh saying he was not involved in the rape and trafficking case.
Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress president Joplin Scott Shylla said on Wednesday there is no reason for Lyngdoh to step down as he was not involved in the rape case.
“Even the guest house is not his personal house, so how can he keep a tab on it. If he was involved, we would be the first one to ask him to step down,” she added.
Local NGOs and a section of the people are demanding Lyngdoh’s resignation after arrests were made from Marvelene’s Inn, the guest house at Rilbong owned by the Minister’s family, and investigation showed that the 14-year-old girl was raped more than once at Marvelene’s.
Mahila Congress Committee of Sohiong block also supported Lyngdoh, who represents Sohiong constituency.
“He was not involved in the Marvelene’s Inn incident. We will urge Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and MPCC chief D.D Lapang not to drop HDR Lyngdoh,” said Sohiong Block Mahila Congress Committee president Martis Lyngdoh Thabah, who, along with other members, was at Congress Bhavan here on Wednesday to protest against BJP leader Binay Katihar’s remark on Priyanka Gandhi.
Commenting on why were they silent on various crime incidents in the State, Shylla said, “With regard to the Governor issue, the lady did not file an FIR. The Governor felt guilty and resigned.”
“In the case of Dorphang, he admitted that he was guilty,” she added.
In connection with the rising crime in the State, the State Mahila Congress unit has decided to follow up on every issue that takes place.
