SHILLONG: The Syiem of Hima Maharam, Niandro Syiemiong, has refuted allegations of fund misuse levelled by Phamless Syiemlieh, a member of the Syiemlieh clan, and said the latter was trying to usurp land.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Syiemiong said Syiemiong Sawkpoh Nonglang-Jakrem and Syiemlieh Sawkpoh Maharam have the right to elect the Syiem of Maharam Syiemship.
“On what basis can they make a complaint against the Syiem as they are electors of the Syiem,” he said, adding, “The Syiem is accountable only to the Dorbar Hima and the District Council.” The Syiemlieh clan had demanded the removal or suspension of Syiemiong for “misusing funds and land belonging to Hima Maharam”.
However, Syiemiong alleged that since 1987, the Syiemlieh clan had tried to allegedly usurp the land of the Hima, Balat-Ranikor and Photkrod market.
Clarifying on the one-eighth share of the District Council, Syiemiong said the share is for the Syiem and it was paid to him and the allegations of corruption are baseless and fabricated. He went on to say that the functioning of the Hima is transparent.
