SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills Police Department awarded three citizens for their promptness and for helping the department arrest the culprits in two separate incidents in the city.
It was the alertness of Baiahunlang Khyriem of Mawngap Rim and Wanbhabok Myrthong of Marbisu Mawkhan that led police to the house of Saralinda Kharphuli, who kidnapped a three-week-old infant of one Shibari Khyriem of Marbisu on January 7.
Based on the information provided by the duo, police arrested the kidnapper at Umran Dairy in Ri-Bhoi and recovered the child.
In another incident, Garry Warjiri of 4½ Mile helped police in arresting the driver of a dumper truck that ran over a motorcycle killing two persons.
Warjri noted down the registration number of the truck that was trying to flee after the incident and informed the police who later intercepted the truck at Lumdiengjri.
Khyriem, Myrthong and Warjri were later felicitated by the police department.
Speaking to reporters, SP East Khasi Hills M. Kharkrang said, “Through the years we are trying to reach out to the public in various ways. I feel through the years, it has improved a lot and nowadays we do not feel that the public will not cooperate with us.”
In a bid to improve its image, the department is organising awareness programmes in colleges and schools and taking help of social media to reach out to the youth.
Stating that, the relationship with the public has strengthened, the SP said, “The public wants law and order to prevail and that is exactly what we are doing and to achieve that we need the cooperation of the public.”
