SHILLONG: Four years into the killing of two jail staff at Williamnagar jail in East Garo Hills, the culprits are yet to be arrested. The group that carried out the attack has not been identified either.
It was on the night of February 2, 2013, that the armed assailants entered the jail and two jail officials – Assistant Jailer Neil Warjri and Warder Sarai Singh Thabah – were dragged out and shot dead in cold blood.
The target of the militants was Warjri and not Thabah as per the magisterial probe report on the incident.
Though the government paid compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh each to the kin of the victims, mystery surrounds as to who committed the daring crime.
Police had initially suspected GNLA and later the version of the police was that the attack was carried out by a team led by ANVC-B commander Sengbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin.
Later, Momin formed United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA).
But the findings of the magisterial probe negated allegation against Norrok and did not name any militant group.
As per the report, Assistant Jailor Warjri came to Williamnagar jail for duty only on January 31, 2013, and the incident took place on February 2. Moreover, Norrok, who was arrested in connection with the attack on MPCC working president Deborah Marak, was out on bail much before Warjri was posted.
According to the magisterial inquiry report, only investigation into the crime by a police investigating officer will clarify which militant group was behind the crime.
However, police are yet to conduct a proper probe into the incident as per the suggestion of the magistrate.
Meghalaya DGP S.B Singh told reporters on Thursday that he would take up the matter with Deputy Inspector General of Police (Western Range) S.S Kynjing.
