SHILLONG: The proposed move of the State Government to construct entry and exit points at 12th Mile, Umpher in Byrnihat has hit a stumbling block with the joint action committee (JAC) from the area opposing the plan.
In a statement issued on Thursday, JAC said that in earlier meetings and subsequent submission of representation to the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, it had opposed the setting up of the entry and exit points on the grounds that the creation of the points would endanger the lives of hundreds, especially schoolchildren who had to brave the thousands of vehicles passing through the area everyday.
“The village authority, NGOs, church leaders, headman, school authorities and general public of the area are vehemently opposing the land acquisition for construction of the entry and exit points, which will lead to sound and air pollution and affect the health of those residing nearby. It will also disturb the smooth functioning of schools and churches, thereby spoiling the peaceful atmosphere of the village,” the statement added.
JAC argued that the people of the area have already been affected by the construction of the four-lane national highway as many have lost their source of livelihood after being evicted from the roadside.
The Committee pointed out that the proposed site for the entry and exit points is a hillock (around 25-30 feet), which if removed, would force people at the site to relocate and this may even lead to soil erosion during rainy season that could bury houses in the vicinity.
They also fear that the setting up of entry and exit points would lead to heavy security presence in the area and in case of a clash with militant groups trying to infiltrate into the state, people may get caught in the crossfire.
JAC clarified that it is opposing the move for the safety of the villagers.
The decision to construct entry and exit points was taken by the Government after pro-ILP pressure groups demanded the implementation of ILP in the State.
