JOWAI: The body of a 40-year-old woman, who went missing last Saturday, was found in an abandoned coal mine in East Jaintia Hills on Monday morning.
The woman, identified as Fatima Dkhar of Jalyiah village, went to collect firewood from a nearby jungle on February 4 and did not return, police said. She was with a friend.
Sources said on Saturday evening, her friend left and she had a drink with some unknown persons near her home.
Fatima’s relatives, who found the body in the mine at Khloo Sait Pathi, suspect that the woman, who was the mother of two, was raped and murdered. The Rs 4,000 that she had with her was also stolen but her mobile phone was found near her body.
The Jaintia Students’ Movement, who condemned the incident, has demanded immediate arrest of the accused.
