SHILLONG: Shillong Police has alerted the public not to fall prey to fraudulent callers promising to sell gold below the market rate.
SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that as per several complaints received, unscrupulous persons call over phone offering to sell gold for less than the market rate citing that the gold has been accidently unearthed while digging up a construction site.
The callers insist that the intending buyers come to Assam (mostly upper Assam) to make the payment.
Despite advisories, several people from East Khasi Hills are falling prey to such calls, the SP City said.
In a recent case, one person from Mawngap, who had fallen prey to such a caller, went all the way to Tezpur in Assam to make a payment of Rs 7 lakh for gold bars, only to find out later that the product sold was bronze coated with golden colour.
A case of cheating has been registered at Laban police station.
