SHILLONG: Faking sickness by persons who are arrested in connection with various crimes in Meghalaya will be a thing of the past as the Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Meena Kharkongor, will insist on the formation of a Medical Board to testify such cases.
There are several instances of arrested persons suddenly ‘falling ill’ and taking admission in hospitals thereby delaying the investigation.
The latest case is that of Edmund Paul Kharir, the manager of Marvelene’s Inn run by the family of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh.
Soon after his arrest in connection with the sex racket case involving the 14-year-old girl, Edmund was taken to Civil Hospital as he stated that he was unwell.
However, Kharkongor pointed out that there is a need on the part of the medical experts to examine and confirm whether the arrested persons are suffering from ill health.
“In this context, I will insist on the formation of a Medical Board by the Directorate of Heath Services to testify whether the arrested accused persons are fit or not,” Kharkongor said.
She has also decided to meet the concerned health authorities on Monday to ensure that the complaints related to health of the arrested persons are genuine and not fake to delay the process of investigation.
