SHILLONG: A state-level sensitisation programme for hotel owners on HIV/AIDS and other related issues was held at Shillong Sadar Police Station on Saturday.
Rebina Subba of Shamakami, while making a presentation, said it is important for hotel owners to educate their employees about HIV/AIDS and suggested that hotel owners should keep pamphlets with information about the disease at their hotels for the employees as well as guests.
During the meet, it was informed by the Meghalaya Aids Control Society that as per reports, between 1999 and December 31, 2016, as many as 2,388 people have been registered with Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and 1,568 are still under treatment. “The number of people alive on ART is 1,146 and 324 did not continue their treatment after registering at the ART,” Subba said.
NPP state president W. Kharlukhi, who was the chief guest at the programme, said the political class, including legislators should be enlightened on HIV/AIDS. He also congratulated the organisers for holding the sensitisation programme.
D.K Prasad, officer in charge of Sadar police station, also sought the cooperation of all stakeholders, including hoteliers to overcome the challenges in fighting the deadly virus. The programme was attended by hoteliers from across the city.
