SHILLONG: The bypass at Umsning, which is being constructed under Umiam-Jorabat four-lane road project, is likely to take more time owing to the delay of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) in issuing variation order for construction of a bridge and an underpass for vehicles.
According to some experts, it will take at least 4-5 months to construct the two structures and the commissioning of the bypass will be delayed  if NHAI does not issue the necessary orders for construction of the two structures.
The estimated budget of the two structures is around Rs 10 crore and the experts say both structures should be completed before monsoon.
The idea of a vehicular underpass was suggested as it is difficult to level the new PWD road and the existing PWD road. With construction of embankments, it would be impossible to construct the road without the underpass.
If things go as planned, the Umsning bypass will be commissioned in June and with it, the Umiam-Jorabat expressway will be finally completed.
