SHILLONG: With an aim to ease congestion, the Shillong Traffic police (STP) will identify roads in the city which can be expanded and submit a proposal to the PWD.
Speaking to media persons after meeting a delegation of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) on Monday, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem said the traffic branch of the Shillong police is contemplating identifying more roads which needed widening to reduce traffic snarls in the city.
He informed that even in the past the Shillong Traffic Police had initiated a similar exercise in which some roads were widened.
In its bid to tackle traffic snarls, STP recently made some changes in the routes with Hopkinson Road, Jacob’s Ladder Road and Boyce Road being opened in reverse direction. However, the general public is still apprehensive about the new arrangement.Syiem said the new system has been implemented on trial basis and the matter will be reviewed once schools reopen.
Earlier, the HNYF central body had urged the Deputy Commissioner to implement government plans and programmes immediately to ease traffic congestion. According to HNYF, time has come for people to part with their land for expansion of roads in view of the traffic problems faced by the city.
They have also suggested that the traffic police should also identify proper embarkment and disembarkment points to ensure local taxis do not pick and drop passengers everywhere.
