Illegal fund transfer row

SHILLONG: The State Government will not interfere in the ‘murky affairs’ of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) unless it receives a formal complaint.
Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, District Council Affairs (DCA) Minister Prestone Tynsong said, “At present we will not interfere in the affairs of the KHADC. Unless a complaint comes to the department, we cannot step in.”
The KHADC is mired in controversy over illegal transfer of Rs 2 crore to private bank accounts.
However, Tynsong said the inquiry committee constituted by the executive body of the KHADC will complete its task so as to remove the ambiguity surrounding the financial anomalies in the Council.
It may be mentioned that the inquiry report, being made by S. Kharsyiemlieh, Judge of the District Council Court and S.B. Laitthma, First Class Magistrate of the District Council Court will be placed before the EC on Thursday.
Stating that the government will step in at the right time, he said the department will keep a tab on the developments of the Council based on complaints while upholding constitutional provision in handling the contentious issue of scams in the KHADC.
Another irritant was the decision of the EC to extend the service of its secretary Welljune Syiemlieh and his appointment as Principal Secretary, a post which was unknown to the Council.
UDP is also annoyed over the delay in making public the magisterial inquiry report on the illegal transfer of Rs 2 crore to private bank accounts, especially that of Syiemlieh.
