SHILLONG: Inter-state gangs having “connections in Garo Hills” were involved in the Garobadha dacoity case that took place on the night of January 23.
Informing this on Tuesday, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said the miscreants who carried out the heinous crime of assaulting members of a family besides looting them hail from Mankachar and nearby areas of Assam.
Members of several Garo Hills organisations, who are upset over the slow pace of investigation into the Garobadha dacoity case, have decided to petition the State Human Rights Commission to seek justice for the victims. The incident took place on January 23 when an armed gang of robbers from Assam attacked the family of Tapan Ghosh critically injuring him besides assaulting others including his two sons, wife and sister-in-law. The robbers took away their ornaments and money.  Replying to a query, the WGH DC said that all the victims have been discharged from the hospital except Tapan Ghosh, who is still in ICU.
On allegations that police did not turn up at the spot despite the fact that the police station was located just a few hundred metres away, he said the matter would be investigated into. “We have to ascertain if the allegations are true and what was the reason for late arrival of the police,” he said.
The shocking incident which rocked Garo Hills also came up for discussion when the Chief Secretary visited Garo Hills recently.
