SHILLONG: The Thma-U-Rangli-Juki (TUR) on Tuesday initiated a campaign on the occasion of Valentine’s Day to create awareness on ‘consent’ at a time when rapes and other forms of sexual harassment are rampant in the State.
TUR leaders visited Ward’s Lake and places such as cafes and restaurants and distributed stickers with messages like “If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get my consent. If it is not yes, it is rape”.
TUR leader Angela Rangad said “It is high time that sex education should be introduced as a curriculum in schools. Teachers should be well-trained to impart sex education.” She also added that the church should take a secular look on the issue of sex rather than focusing on the moral aspect of it.
They also felt the need to take comprehensive social action to address the cause of different forms of sexual assaults and to have conversations with all on consent, negotiation, pleasure, respect and gender equality.
