SHILLONG: A delegation from Shella, Mawlong and Bholaganj areas of East Khasi Hills District called on Forest Minister Clement Marak at his official residence on Thursday to discuss matters related to the ban on limestone mining.
In the meeting, the quarry owners and laboures apprised the minister of the hardships faced by them post the ban on limestone mining. The delegation informed the Minister about the ground reality stating that the ban has affected the border residents since most of the people depend on limestone mining for their livelihood. Moreover, many laboures who were earlier engaged in the industry are now jobless.
The Minister gave a patient hearing to the points raised by them and assured that he will ask the officers of the Forest department to ensure that the old limestone stock is cleared at the earliest.
The delegation was led by the president Meghalaya Chambers of Commerce Stodar Dkhar, another functionary Paskha Malangniang and others.
Dkhar said that delegation appreciated the assurance given by the Minister.
