‘GNLA money laundering accused can move bail application’

SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya on Thursday said that accused Solly Sangma, who was picked up by police for laundering money for the GNLA, is at liberty to move bail application before the Court.
During a hearing on Thursday, the counsel for the petitioner F Qureshi submitted that the accused has been booked under Sections 120(B), 121/121 (A)/ 123 of the IPC read with Sections 10(A)/13(2)/17/18-B/19/20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, without any reason and is in custody since December 12 last.
In response to the order, investigating officer Anthony Ch. Momin along with R. Gurung, State counsel appeared before the Court.  HC directed the prosecution to produce the accused in the local court in Garo Hills on February 17 following which the accused will be at liberty to move the bail application. The Court was further directed to look into the bail application and to consider the same as per law.
As per the Court order, the accused has also written a letter on January 13 to his mother informing that he has not been produced before the Court.
The Court said that the petitioner is also at liberty to produce the letter before the lower court. It further directed that all the UTPs are to be produced on the date fixed without fail.
However, on Friday, the accused could not be produced in Tura Court since the ADM was out of station.
Solly Sangma, who is the son of a prominent local musician from Tura, was arrested by South Garo Hills Police for channeling extortion money of the GNLA amounting to several lakhs of rupees.
