TURA: A senior cadre of the GNLA was killed in an encounter in West Khasi Hills on Monday night.
A group of GNLA militants was at Riangdim village in Shallang to collect tax from coal dealers and exporters. A team of Special Force-10 commandoes of the State police intercepted the rebels and the encounter ensued in which a rebel, identified as senior cadre Walamdaria M. Sangma, was killed. The other rebels in the group escaped.
Sangma was from the 2012 batch of GNLA recruits. The State police are trying to confirm whether Sangma was the same person who crossed over from Bangladesh to join the outfit.
The police recovered a .22 rifle, a pistol, ammunition and a wireless handset.
