23 rape cases in less than two months

SHILLONG: Twenty-three rape cases were reported in the State between January 1 and February 23, according to police data.
There were three cases including a gang rape in East Khasi Hills, six including a gang rape in Ri Bhoi district, five in West Khasi Hills, three in West Jaintia Hills, two in East Jaintia Hills, five including a gang rape by juveniles in South West Khasi Hills and two cases including a gang rape in North Garo Hills, the police statistics show.
Need for proper
investigation
An official source said on Friday police need to carry out proper investigations into the rape cases so that the culprits can be punished by courts which will deter similar instances in future.
There has been a demand to set up special courts to deal with crime against women in the state and the matter is pending with the High Court of Meghalaya after it was taken up by the Law Department.
Over 600 cases pending
There are over 600 rape cases pending with various courts in Meghalaya and low conviction rate is being seen as one of the major causes for spurt in sexual crimes.
