UDP panel to meet on Tuesday to pursue KHADC graft

SHILLONG: The subcommittee of the UDP will meet on Tuesday to deliberate on the nine-point query the party has posed to KHADC CEM P.N Syiem.
UDP working president Bindo Lanong said the party would petition the Meghalaya Governor about the affairs of the KHADC as the “incumbent CEM feels that the UDP was trying to oust him in nexus with the Congress”.
The UDP has already expressed dissatisfaction over the clarification given by Syiem on the nine questions posed by the party in relation to various scams in the district council.
According to Lanong, some MLAs and MDCs will also attend the meeting.  The nine-point query deals with the purported misappropriation of Rs 16 lakh belonging to the Forest Department, lack of transparency in allotment of land in Ri Bhoi with a compensation of Rs 23 lakh and matters related to providing loan to Khasi Heritage Conservation Forum. Another irritant is the decision of the EC to extend the service of its secretary Welljune Syiemlieh and his appointment as Principal Secretary, a post which was unknown to the Council.
UDP was also annoyed over the delay in making public the magisterial inquiry report on the illegal transfer of Rs 2 crore to private bank accounts, especially that of Syiemlieh’s.
The probe report was tabled on February 22 and a House panel was formed to follow up the issue after Syiemlieh was indicted.
“Let’s see what comes out from the House Committee. We are pinning our hopes on it,” he said.
