House pays tributes to late leaders

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the first day of the budget session on Friday paid tribute to at least 14 political leaders, including one from the State who passed away recently.
Speaking at the obituary reference, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma recalled the contribution of late Dalu MLA, Mountbatten K. Sangma.
The Chief Minister said that Mountbatten had served the people not only in the capacity of an MLA but even while holding different positions in the Congress party.
Mukul Sangma also remembered the service of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa and said that her demise has left a vacuum in the country.
“She is the architect of a number of initiatives which brought socio-economic transformation in Tamil Nadu,” Sangma said.
He also recalled the services rendered by other great leaders of the country who passed away recently.
On the other hand, Leader of Opposition, Donkupar Roy said that Mountbatten was accessible to all the MLAs whenever they required his help.
He also said that with the demise of J Jayalalithaa, the country has lost an important and tall female leader.
Dadenggre MLA James Sangma said that he felt proud for the achievement which the late leaders have brought to the country.
He recalled the contribution of leaders like Member of Parliament from Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh Harsh Vardhan and National Conference leader Mohammad Shafi Bhatt from Jammu & Kashmir, who passed away recently.
The members of the House also recalled the contribution of late legislator of Nagaland K.V Puzha, E. Mohammed, MP from Kerala and others.
Senior leaders of the Assembly like SC Marak and DD Lapang also paid eloquent tributes to the departed leaders.
Taking part in obituary reference, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, AT Mondal said that people of Meghalaya have lost a great leader with the demise of Mountbatten Sangma.
He also said that MLAs can learn how to work hard and serve people from J Jayalalithaa’s life who had served the people of Tamil Nadu in a befitting manner.
