SHILLONG: The body of a woman was recovered on Tuesday at Itshyrwat, on the way to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in East Khasi Hills district. The woman, aged around 30 years, was a divorcee and mother of five children.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said the victim was from Mawprem. He said, “The investigation is on. The Lumdiengjri Police Station has records of the woman and has called the relatives of the victim to identify the body by Wednesday.”
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya State Commission for Women in a press communiqué stated that the recent incidents that occurred at Dkhiah, East Jaintia Hills, and at Itshyrwat, East Khasi Hills, are outrageous and send shiver down the spine.
Chairperson of the Commission, Theilin Phanbuh, said, “We strongly appeal to all citizens to condemn this gruesome act of violence.”
The commission has demanded that the concerned authorities arrest the culprit/culprits at the earliest and stringent punishment be meted out to the perpetrators of the crime.
“When we are supposed to celebrate the achievement of women on International Women’s Day, this tragic and shocking news has really dampened our spirit as well as our minds,” she added.
