TURA: A senior cadre of the disbanded United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) who, along with its chief Singbirth Marak alias Norok, had violated the peace agreement with the Government and gone underground to form a new outfit, has surrendered to Garo Hills police on Tuesday.
Jijabell C Marak alias Asim (25) gave himself up to authorities at the SP office in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, in the presence of church leaders and family members. He did not surrender any weapon.
Jijabell, who is from Darang Chira village of Nongalbibra in South Garo Hills, was close to Norok, who had recently joined hands with wanted criminal William Sangma to form a new outfit called the United A’chik National Front (UANF).
Norok was shot dead by police last week in North Garo Hills. William had a narrow escape two days before Norok died.
Police said the new outfit has reportedly recruited militants from various outfits in both Assam and Garo Hills. Cadres from the Bodo group NDFB, ULFA and even the GNLA are said to have been approached by both Norok and William to be a part of the new organisation.
Norok and his batch of armed rebels had previously sold weapons to GNLA for a large sum of money.
