JOWAI: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurated a police station at Nartiang village on Saturday.
This is the fourth police station to have been inaugurated in two weeks. The Government had announced setting up of 18 new police stations in the State.
The chief minister in his inaugural address said, “With this new police station, let this particular place become an example for the rest of the State as the most peaceful and secured area.”
Talking about the new police stations, Sangma said this is an “important extension of the institution of the Government to ensure that it is able to create a new benchmark to have effective, accountable and exclusive governance”.
Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, who was present at the inaugural ceremony, said the creation of four civil sub-divisions, six C&RD blocks and 18 police stations is a move to bring the government closer to the people.
“We do have fund constraint but when there is a will there is a way, so we need to take bold decisions and bold steps to bring the government closer to its people,” he added.
In a brief note, West Jaintia Hills SP R. Muthu informed that the police station under Thadlaskein C&RD Block covers 110 villages with Saitsama and Khanduli Battalion outpost under its jurisdiction.
“The area under this police station spreads from boundaries of Ri Bhoi district in the north, West Hamren district in Assam in the east, Jowai police station in the south and East Khasi Hills on the west,” the SP said, adding that the Nartiang Police Investigation Centre, which was upgraded to a police station, started in 1972.  Talking about law and order, the chief minister said, “Let our people understand the responsibility of protecting our women and children. Let us share this responsibility together.”
He also expressed his concern over frequent road accidents. “When the road becomes good, we tend to drive fast, we forget the pedestrians, the children, the senior citizens, we forget our people who are physically challenged,” he said and called for sensitisation programmes.
Among other dignitaries present at the programme were local MLA and Power and C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Mawphlang MLA Kennedy Khyriem, Sutnga MLA Hopeful Bamon, Mowkaiaw MLA Robinus Syngkon and Chief Executive Member of the JHADC Thombor Shiwat, among others.
