SHILLONG: Davis N.R Marak took charge as Superintendent of Police (SP) of East Khasi Hills on Tuesday after outgoing SP M. Kharkrang handed over charges to the former East Garo Hills police chief.
Marak said the challenges in East Khasi Hills, which is reeling from drug menace and crime against women, will be different from that in the militancy-affected East Garo Hills.
“It is a different situation altogether. In East Garo Hills, I was basically in a militancy-affected district, which was a priority (to tackle militancy),” he added.
When asked on the issue of rising drug addiction among youths, he said, “I will discuss the issue with officers and see how to get plans worked out. There will be ways and means to tackle the problem.”
Marak pointed out that crime against women is a focus area and besides preventive measures, proper investigation into such cases is also important.
On police-public relationship, Marak assured that good relation will be maintained during his tenure.
“We tried to do the same in East Garo Hills. The surrenders (of militants) were possible due to cooperation between the public and police,” he added.
Kharkrang was the SP of East Khasi Hills for four years and seven months and has spent 15 out of 20 years of his police career in the district.
Kharkrang has been posted as special superintendent of police in a major reshuffle by the Home (Police) Department in February.
