SHILLONG: PHE Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Tuesday the Government wanted the GHADC to hand over the task of water supply to his department.
In reply to a question by John Leslee K. Sangma (Independent), Tynsong said in the Assembly on Tuesday that the GHADC, and not PHE, is looking after the distribution of water in Tura town.
“We are not shifting responsibility by saying the GHADC is looking after the supply of water in Tura town,” the Minister said.
Tynsong said he had spoken to the CEM about handing over the task to the PHE Department as the GHADC does not have the expertise.Sangma, however, pointed out that the GHADC had failed in its duty to provide water and added that the Council owes Rs 25 crore to the PHED.
To a supplementary question, the PHE Minister said if need be, he would personally visit Tura to assess the situation and hold a meeting with all stakeholders.
Tynsong also said he would streamline the supply of water through public taps. Commenting on the reason for the shortage of drinking water, Tynsong said discharge during the dry reason is reduced.
He also said that when there is power shortage, tripping takes place. Moreover, loss of water due to faulty distribution network is another reason, he added.
Tynsong said as one of the steps to have more water, the Government is looking at sustainability programmes. “The surroundings of the sources should be kept clean and green,” he said, adding that the Government will also augment the water supply scheme.
