State engages agencies for multi-hazard vulnerability mapping

SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister in charge Revenue and Disaster Management R.C Laloo informed the Assembly on Wednesday that three agencies have been engaged for multi-hazard vulnerability mapping in the State.
In reply to a question by Jemino Mawthoh (UDP), Laloo said that the Government had engaged North East Space Application Centre (NESAC), North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat and Geological Survey of India (GSI), Shillong chapter to map the vulnerability.
“These agencies have to use highly technical methodology. We are yet to decide on the proper method as final reports have not been submitted till now,” he said.
Laloo said that these agencies have been asked to supply different specifications to address the vulnerability of the State as part of disaster preparedness. As far as earthquake assessment for Shillong and Tura is concerned, the North East Institute of Science and Technology has been entrusted with the survey. “We have received only two preliminary reports from them,” Laloo added.
