Air Marshal Khosla visits Salua Air Force station
Kolkata: Air Marshal Anil Khosla, Air Officer Commanding-in–Chief, Eastern Air Command (EAC) on Thursday visited Air Force Station Salua in West Midnapur. Air Marshal Khosla who took over the command of EAC in January was on a familiarisation visit. Salua is an important radar base of the IAF, located near Kharagpur. The Air Marshal met the key personnel of the station and was briefed about the assigned role and various activities of the base, a Defence wing press release here said. The AOC-in-C stressed on the need for constant updation of professional competence amongst air warriors besides inculcation of leadership qualities and service ethos. (PTI)
CBI arrests five for possession of 158 kg cannabis
New Delhi: The CBI has arrested five persons for alleged possession of 158 kg (approximate) cannabis with value of about 15 lakh in domestic market. CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said here on Thursday that a case was registered against five suspects, all residents of Panipat and Kurukshetra in Haryana, for illegal possession of cannabis. The agency intercepted the gang at Saharanpur Railway Station, Uttar Pradesh while they were travelling in Sealdeh Express, he said. The CBI sources said approximate value of the contraband is Rs 10,000 per kg in domestic market. (PTI)
Over 95,000 Indians evacuated from abroad in last 2 yrs: Govt
New Delhi: Over 95,000 Indians were evacuated and brought back home from countries affected by war, internal strife and natural disaster during the last two years, the government said on Thursday. “95,665 Indian nationals were assisted, evacuated and brought back to India during the last two years,” Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. He said the government has been according highest priority to the safety and security of overseas Indians and all matters relating to them are being monitored at the level of the external affairs minister. Singh said to ensure welfare of Indians seeking to go abroad for employment, the government has also launched an awareness campaign called ‘Go safe, go trained’. (PTI)
Over 100 hoax calls about bomb threats in 4 yrs: Govt
New Delhi: More than a hundred hoax calls about bomb threats in flights and airports in the country were received in the last four years, the government said on Thursday. Nearly half of these calls were made in 2016 alone, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha told the Lok Sabha on Thursday. There were 14 hoax calls in 2014. This figure grew to 34 in 2015. The number of hoax calls in 2016 stood at 54. This year, so far, there have been three such calls, he said. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has been seeking stricter punishment, like life imprisonment, for such callers under Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Civil Aviation Act. Under this law, life imprisonment can be awarded for communicating “such information which he knows to be false so as to endanger the safety of an aircraft in flight” and for disrupting “any service at the airport, endangering or threatening to endanger safety at that airport”. Belgian woman tourist dies in an accident in Rajasthan
Bikaner: A 76-year-old Belgian woman tourist has died after being hit by a speeding motorcycle here, police said on Thursday. The incident happened on Wednesday at Sardulsingh circle when Wiser Yvonne was hit by a motorcycle and received head injuries, they said. She was rushed to PBM Government hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Yvonne, who was accompanied by her sister, was the part of a 29-member tourist group, the police said. (PTI)
Minor found hanging in her house
Bhopal: A six-year-old girl was found hanging in her house in Barela village near here, the police said on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Afia Khan. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when her parents were away while her four siblings were playing outside, Koh-e-Fiza police station in-charge Anil Vajpayee said. Afia, a student of class I, was spotted hanging from ceiling with a stole in a room by her siblings after they returned home, who in turn informed their parents. The officer said the girl was taken to hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The police officer said they are investigating from all angles as the girl was too young to hang herself.
