SHILLONG: A hero’s welcome was accorded to Peter Lawai, accused of abetting the accused in a gang rape case, when he was released from jail on a bail bond on Wednesday.
Such was the jubilation among the local residents of Mawryngkneng for their Sordar (Lawai) that a felicitation programme was organised by the Dorbar Shnong on Thursday.
“It is a day of joy for the people of Mawryngkneng that on March 15 our Sordar, Peter J. Lawai, was released on bail,” the Dorbar said in a press release.
The accused, meanwhile, vehemently asserted his innocence and alleged hidden agenda behind his arrest.
While addressing the crowd, Lawai said the allegation against him was baseless and was instigated by some individuals.
Lawai even stated that he had helped the minor victim’s family to approach the police.
