SHILLONG: The State Budget 2017-18 has failed to address the fiscal health of Meghalaya, said HSPDP MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit on Friday.
Participating in the general discussion on budget in the Assembly, the Nongkrem legislator observed that the financially starved State’s revenue generation must improve.
Citing instances of the government losing on revenue, Basaiawmoit said several trucks passing through the weighbridge at 3rd Mile are allowed to go without even weighing the minerals.
He suggested that CCTV cameras should be installed at every weighbridge to plug the leakages.
Speaking on the contentious railway projects in Meghalaya, Basaiawmoit said, “Goods trains till Byrnihat is fine but passenger trains till Byrnihat should not be allowed as the State does not need railways.”
He also asked the State government to order an inquiry into the reports that vegetables coming from outside the State are being injected with preservatives that are injurious to health.
“The government should conduct an inquiry to check if these vegetables are fit for human consumption,” he said.
