SHILLONG: As the number of vehicles on narrow roads in the city increases by the day, traffic snarls are becoming a regular feature.
With the Government’s long-pending plan to construct flyovers falling flat, Shillong is yet to have any concrete solution to the traffic congestion.
On Friday and Saturday, different areas of Shillong witnessed heavy traffic flow and roads remained chock-a-block.
Besides narrow roads, undisciplined drivers too add to the snarl and traffic personnel’s headache.
Many vehicles tend to overtake when there is a serpentine line of cars ahead and make the situation worse. Though Shillong police has time and again called for a convergence of various line departments  and stakeholders, including the public, to address traffic woes, no such joint initiative has been taken till date.
To avoid waiting in the traffic, many residents now prefer two-wheelers so that negotiating the maze on city roads becomes easier.
An official of the State Government prophesied that most of the people in Shillong would buy two-wheelers in the next five years since traffic snarls will only increase in the future.
