SHILLONG: The Syiem of Hima Sohra, Paiem Freeman Sing Syiem, has rebutted claims that he granted land documents to non-tribals without consulting the executive committee of the villages and blamed the Dorbar Raid Majai.
Defending his move to dissolve the executive committee of the Dorbar Raid Majai, Syiem told reporters, “The Sordar of Raid Majai, Ekhel Marwein,  along with the Executive Committee wrote to the authorities of Rama Krishna Ashrama for giving away land to it without the knowledge of the Executive Dorbar of the Hima Sohra. Marwein also gave away land to non-tribals to establish weighbridge at Majai.”
The Syiem alleged that it was due to Marwein’s conduct that he dissolved the Dorbar Raid Majai.
The Syiem, Myntri in charge of Raid Majai, Mathew Mawdkhap and members of the Executive Dorbar of Hima Sohra, held a meeting at Majai on Saturday to clear the air of charges against Syiem.
However, the people of Majai rebuffed the meeting by carrying black flags and shouted anti-Syiem slogans. Police personnel were called in and authorities from Sohra civil sub-division rushed to the spot in order to control the public. Syiem said the previous Myntri in charge of Raid Majai would be aware of the issue and there was no such abuse of power.
“The granting of land documents is to non-tribals who are residents of Majai and not outsiders,” he added.
Residents of nine localities falling under the raid of Majai took out a protest rally and burnt effigies of the Syiem and a Myntri of Majai on March 14.
