SHILLONG: The State government has rubbished the allegations of politicising the creation of blocks.
There was a surprise protest last Friday by FKJGP and HYC activists in front of the Assembly demanding the inauguration of Mawlai Block at the earliest.
The pressure groups alleged that the government was giving priority to the inauguration of blocks under the jurisdiction of Congress MLAs.
However, Chief Secretary K.S Kropha downplayed the allegation and said if the government had political intentions, the block would not have been sanctioned.
“It is not that the government is delaying the process. The process is on to launch Mawlai Block. It will happen once the land is identified,” he said.
Earlier, the chief minister had asked the leaders of the State not to politicise the issue of setting up community and rural development blocks. While one section of the leaders preferred the headquarters of Mawlai Block to be in a place accessible to all, others wanted it to be at Mawsiatkhnam.
Sangma had said that the block was for the benefits of the people and the issue should not be politicised.
The initial plan of the government was to create four blocks but two more were added to the list. With the existing 39 blocks, the State will have as many as 45 blocks when the new blocks come into being.
The government has inaugurated four blocks – Demdema (West Garo Hills), Damalgre (South West Garo Hills), Sohiong (East Khasi Hills) and Bhoirymbong (Ri Bhoi). Besides Mawlai, Bajengdoba is another block in North Garo Hills which is awaiting inauguration.
