15 major polluting industries in M’laya

SHILLONG: Fourteen of the 15 major polluting industries in the State will have to install effluent treatment plants within three months from February as per the requirement of the Supreme Court.
In reply to a question by UDP’s Donkupar Roy, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said on Monday that there are as many as 15 polluting industries in the State and only one has set up the effluent plant.
The industries include Mawmluh Cherra Cement Ltd. Sohra, Shakam-bari Ferrous Ltd.     Rwiang (West Khasi Hills), Shyam Century Ferrous, EPIP-Byrnihat, Maithan Alloys (P) Ltd, EPIP-Byrnihat, RNB Cements Ltd, Umiam Industrial Area, Barapani, CMJ Breweries, Extended EPIP-Byrnihat (Ri Bhoi), Star Cement Ltd., Star Cement Meghalaya Ltd. and Meghalaya Power Ltd. (all at Lumshnong village), Adhunik Cement Ltd., Thangskai village, Amrit Cement Ltd. at Umlaper village, JUD Cement Ltd. at Wahiajer village, Hills Cement Ltd. at Mynkre village, Green Valley Industries (P) Ltd. at Nongsning village in East Jaintia Hills and Virgo Cement Ltd. at Damas in East Garo Hills.
Out of these, the chief minister said only CMJ Breweries has set up effluent treatment plant.
To a question by Paul Lyngdoh (UDP), the chief minister said both Central and State pollution control boards carry out real-time monitoring of the pollution level of the industries.
According to the chief minister, the latest development is the ruling by the Supreme Court that within three months from February 22 all polluting units will have to set up the effluent plants.
