JOWAI: A pressure group leader from East Jaintia Hills has been arrested on Monday for allegedly attempting to kidnap a restaurant owner on Saturday night.
East Jaintia Hills police said Sambormi Lyngdoh, the general secretary of the East Jaintia National Council (EJNC), was arrested based on information that he was one of the unknown miscreants who attempted to kidnap Chana Narayan Burman from Tripura who runs a restaurant at Ladrymbai.
Lyngdoh and two others came to the restaurant and assaulted Burman and tried to drag him into a car but the latter managed to escape, the police said.
During investigation, the police found out that the vehicle was registered as ML0-11- 0820 in the name of Roibok Lyngdoh of Khliehriat, the elder brother of Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh took the car on Saturday evening, the police said. He was arrested on Monday evening and they were interrogating him.
This is not the first time that the pressure group leader is arrested. Earlier when he was the president of EJNC, he was arrested and jailed for more than three months. Few months ago he was released from Jowai District jail.
Some also alleged that Lyngdoh might be involved in robbing the three petrol pumps in East and West Jaintia Hills.
Lyngdoh was one of the founder leaders of the Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM) and later he associated himself with HNLC and left the outfit without being arrested and interrogated. He wanted to rejoin JSM but later formed EJNC.
