SHILLONG: Congress legislator Dikkanchi Shira has asked the government to conduct an inquiry into the various drawbacks in constructing toilets in schools.
During the question hour on Tuesday, Shira said there are no provisions for water in toilets constructed in schools under the total sanitation campaign.
She wanted the government to rectify the problems in the implementation of the toilet scheme for boys and girls.
In his reply, PHE Minister Prestone Tynsong said toilet facilities are provided to lower primary and upper primary schools.
To the question on providing water in toilets, the minister said he would examine the matter though the provision in this regard is there in all schools.
To a supplementary question by HSPDP legislator Witting Mawsor, Tynsong said          13,501 toilets are constructed for boys and 14,867 toilets for girls.
Replying to a supplementary question by UDP’s Metbah Lyngdoh, the minister said that in 2004-05, the cost of construction of toilet was Rs 20,000, but the cost was raised to Rs 40,000 per toilet in 2014.
