SHILLONG: The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has assured the minor victim of gang rape from Mawryngkneng and her family that it would ensure their safety and justice to the girl.
The 17-year-old girl had voiced her anxiety in a letter to SCPCR after the Sordar, Peter Lawai, who was arrested for abetting the rapists, was released on bail.
SCPCR chairperson, Meena Kharkongor, said the matter has been given utmost priority and after discussion with the superintendent of police (City), it was decided that all means of protection will be given to the victim and her family.
Asserting that SCPCR and the law enforcement authorities will not tolerate any threat, intimidation or ostracism from any quarters, Kharkongor said any person in and around the village found giving verbal threats to the victim or her family will be booked under the law.
The SCPCR chief further assured the family that if required, the judiciary will be approached for redressal of the victim’s grievances.
