Guwahati: The prime accused in the Silapathar AASU office ransacking incident was arrested along with his aide in a joint operation by the Assam police and its West Bengal counterpart from Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district on Wednesday.
A seven-member team of the Assam police, led by ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla, along with the West Bengal police arrested prime accused Subodh Biswas and his aide Subhas Biswas, Subodh’s brother, at Bajitpur in North 24-Parganas district, according to a statement issued by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The Assam police team had been camping in the district for the last three days, Assam Additional Director General of Police (CID) Anil Kumar Jha said.
Jha said that the brother duo were being brought to Guwahati on a seven-day transit remand after being produced in a local court.
The Silapathar incident related to ransacking of an AASU office near NH 15(B) by activists of the Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samanvay Raksha Samiti during a procession following a meeting on March six.
Biswas, the all-India president of the NIBBUSS, was carrying Rs 1 lakh on his head.
Sonowal thanked the state police for achieving a ‘breakthrough’.
“I appreciate the role of Assam Police in nabbing Biswas and also express gratitude to the people for their support in maintaining peace and harmony in the aftermath of the incident,” Sonowal said in a statement here.
An investigation into the incident is going on in full swing and the government will ensure that all involved in the incident are put behind bars, he said in the statement. (PTI)
