SHILLONG: The city police are tightening the noose on irresponsible drinkers out on roads in a bid to make the city a safe zone.
Sadar Police conducted a drive late on Saturday night and picked up eight boys who were drinking inside three vehicles parked behind the Main Secretariat, a high security area.
“That is a high-security area and such activities and their presence at such an odd hour is not desired,” said police.
Sadar police are on constant vigil to ensure that public places are not used by merry-making drinkers.
All the eight boys were arrested and a non-FIR case under the Meghalaya Police Act was lodged against them.
Some of the boys were arrested earlier for similar reason and now a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed on them as per the Meghalaya Police Act.
During the crackdown, a driver and occupants of one vehicle, who were also found consuming alcohol, managed to escape from the scene while the police were occupied in detaining others.
However, the group of boys has been identified and action against them has been initiated.
In a recent meeting with hoteliers, Sadar Police discussed the need for crackdown on drinking in public places.
