Delay in implementation of GSWSS

SHILLONG: The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has observed that there is reluctance on the part of the officers of the PHE Department to provide information sought for on the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) and the Umlyngka Water Supply Scheme (UWSS).
The Committee, in its observations and recommendations for the year 2015- 2016, states, “There is lackadaisical and irresponsible attitude on the part of the officers which tantamount to dereliction of duty.”
It further states that the department could not provide proper information with regards to the delay in implementation of the GSWSS and the water supply scheme in Garo Hills.
The Committee further states that there is lack of planning in the matter relating to the administration of the PHE Department in implementing schemes.
The Committee expressed deep disappointment and disapproval of the PHE Department for not being able to provide safe drinking water to citizens.
“In view of the above, departmental action is required to fix responsibility on those involved in the implementation of the schemes since the department is linked intimately to the health of general public of the state of Meghalaya,” the report added.
No information was supplied to the Committee with regard to the status report on the GSWSS till filing of the report to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
