SHILLONG: The city roads were almost deserted during the rally called by KSU to mark the Khasi National Awakening Day on Tuesday.
Shops were closed along the stretch of the road leading to Nongmynsong when those participating in the rally walked their way to the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) office.
A few meat shops were opened whereas others were kept shut.
The rally, which turned a bit violent at the end, started on a musical note that left many wondering what the occasion was all about.
KSU members gathered at Nongmynsong ground before marching out. A bystander asked this reporter, “What is going on here? Naach gaana hoga yahan mein (Will there be a musical performance)?”
As the procession started with members shouting KSU slogans accompanied by rhythmic drum beat a toddler came out of the gate of a house and started dancing to the tune of the drums.
Some in the crowd encouraged the child to continue.
Some of the onlookers in the locality were clueless about the marching protesters.
During the burning of the effigy, three young boys went up to the terrace to have a clear view.
One of them asked, “Who are the KSU members?” To which one replied, “They are the ones with blue scarves tied around their heads.”
