Jamboree a hit on Day 1 despite rain in WJH
JOWAI: A Jamboree for students, jointly organised by the District Arts and Culture Society and the district administration, was a crowd-puller on the first day on Wednesday despite the inclement weather. The three-day programme, which was held at Northeast Adventist College in Khliehtyrshi, was on the theme ‘Igniting Young Minds’. Over 100 students from three blocks of the district participated in the event. Addressing the gathering at the event, Deputy Commissioner R. Rapthap said, “The Jamboree will encourage students to come out of their shell and interact with participants from other schools. They should grab this opportunity to explore and actively participate in the event.” The events include trekking to historical places like Khimusniang and Khrang Shuri, aerobatics, treasure hunt and dumb charades, among others. There will be lecture sessions on various topics.

Outreach heath camps conducted
AMPATI: The District Health & Family Welfare Bureau under the banner of National Health Mission, South west Garo Hills, conducted two separate Outreach Health Camps, one at Sanjonggre under Gopinathkilla Sub-Centre and another at Daronggre under Mellim PHC, recently. Sanjonggre and Daronggre villages are located in the remotest and inaccessible parts of the district with high incidence of infant deaths and high refusal cases for immunisation as most of the villagers are illiterate. As many as 300 villagers, mostly mothers, expectant mothers and children were benefitted from these health camps. Senior doctors from the district and medical officers from higher facilities conducted free check up and various tests and also gave counseling on family planning, spacing methods. Adolescents were also given health education and counseling on substance abuse and early pregnancy. The sessions in both the villages were followed up with fruitful interactions between the Nokmas, Church leaders and influential leaders of adjoining villages.

Disaster preparedness
AMPATI: As part of its disaster preparedness plan and to respond to any emergency situation, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), South West Garo Hills, has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in the DC’s office building in Ampati and Incidence Response Teams (IRTs) have been put in place with immediate effect. The DDMO and DEO and EAC in-charge Disaster Management will be available in the EOC and in case of any natural calamity in the district they can be contacted at 9402305902, 9612579360 and 9436114478. As per the report of heavy rain alert from the Indian Meteorological Department, the public was advised to take necessary precautionary measures and all officers of the concerned departments were asked to remain alert and to remain in station without fail.
