Video of newborn irks child rights panel

SHILLONG: The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has condemned a recent circulation on WhatsApp, where a graphic picture of a new born baby inside the municipal toilet has gone viral.
The chairperson of the Commission, Meena Kharkongor while taking serious note of the event has condemned the action of people who are misusing internet for their own amusement.
The Commission said that the particular incident related to October 3, last year wherein the Child Welfare Committee had to deal with the particular case and after observing all formalities, the baby was handed over to his maternal grandmother who is now healthy.
“Some people are trying to mislead public by such inhuman circulation, we have taken the matter to the East Khasi Hills Police,” the Commission said.
The also Commission said that in future, if such misleading messages will be circulated around then the source of such messages shall be tracked down and whoever is responsible will be dealt by the law severely. SP Vivek Syiem said that some unscrupulous persons have been circulating the disturbing images of the newly born child and a body of a woman in a stream in social media with mala fide intention to create sensation and confusion in the minds of people.
Syiem also added that the body of the woman in the stream is not an occurrence in East Khasi Hills district.
The SP further said “Any such rumours misleading the public will attract section 505 of IPC where punishment is upto 3 years or with fine or with both.”
