Mentally ill person found dead in WGH
SHILLONG: West Garo Hills Police recently recovered a body of one mentally unstable person near his residence in Tura. Biswajit Das lodged an FIR that on April 2 around 6.30 am, body of Nekra Rabha was found lying near his house. The cadaver was sent to CHC Dadenggre for PM examination. Postmortem report revealed that the person died due to head injury caused by road accident. It may be mentioned that the High Court of Meghalaya in its orders passed few years back had mentioned that mentally ill person should not be allowed to roam.

Petition to stop med officer’s transfer
TURA: Pressure groups, traditional heads and locals in Tikrikilla have urged the Health Department to stall the transfer order of the Medical and Health Officer at the primary health centre. GSU’s Tikrikilla unit and the United Peace and Development Forum, along with Nokmas and villagers, have petitioned the department in Shillong. In their petition to the Director of MI (MCH&FW) in Shillong, the petitioners said the officer’s transfer would greatly affect services as the order does not mention who would take charge.They also stated that the transfer would also slow down the upgrading process of the PHC to CHC.

NEC secretary felicitates women entrepreneurs
SHILLONG: The North Eastern Council (NEC) and Sreemanta Shankar Mission of Guwahati organised “Vasundahara – NE Entrepreneur of the Year” (2014-15), an award presentation function, which was held on April 8 at the Pragjyoti ITA Centre in Guwahati. Natwar Thakkar, Founder of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram was conferred with ‘Purvottar Pran’ award for his contribution to development of the North East. Ram Muivah, Secretary, NEC was the chief guest in the programme. Speaking on the occasion, Muivah focused on NEC’s commitments for promoting women entrepreneurship in the North East through its flagship programme ‘NERCORMP’. He also narrated success stories of women entrepreneurs supported by NERCORMP and NERLP, another successful organisation of Ministry of DoNER functioning in the North East.

Teachers’ body elects office bearers
SHILLONG: The 32nd Biennial General Conference of Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) was held recently at St. Edmund’s College. In the Conference, new office bearers for the term 2017 to 2019 were elected. B.H. Buam (CTE PGT), was re-elected as the president and Prof. Amanda Basaiawmoit (Shillong College) was elected as the general secretary. On the other hand, Prof. M. Tariang (St. Edmund’s College) and Prof. S. Khongsit (Lady Keane College) were the newly elected vice presidents.  Prof. S. Pradhan (St. Anthony’s College), Prof. B. Myrboh (Synod College), P. Sarkhel (St. Edmund’s College), Prof. F. Diengdoh (St. Anthony’s College), M. Kharryngki (Synod College) and D. Nongbri (Lady Keane College) were the six joint secretaries besides 15 executive members were also elected. As a teacher organisation the Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association also extended its moral support to the ongoing agitation of the Meghalaya SSA School Association, a conglomeration of SSA and 4th Teachers’ of the state.

Forest-Water Capacity Building workshop held
SHILLONG: A five-day Forest-Water Capacity Building Workshop was inaugurated by C.P. Marak, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (HOFF) and Chairman of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, on April 10 at ICSSR NEHU Campus in Shillong. The inaugural session of the workshop was organised by ‘Ka Synjuk Ki Arliang Wah Umiam Mawphlang Welfare Society’ was also addressed by B.K. Tiwari, Department of Environmental Studies, NEHU and S. Asutosh, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Head of Climate Change Division and training under MBDA. Experts from WeForest (Belgium), Food and Agriculture Organisation (Italy), United Nations and Twente University (Netherland) conducted the first day of the workshop with a focus on providing hands on training to the participants on understanding the relationship between forest and rain water and also on the steps to be taken to measure the volume of water retained in the forests.

NEIAH celebrates World Homoeopathy Day
SHILLONG: North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of AYUSH, celebrated ‘World Homoeopathy Day on Monday to mark the 262nd birth anniversary of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, founder of homoeopathy, on the campus at Mawdiandiang under the theme ‘Enhancing the quality of Research in Homoeopathy”..Professor R. Sharma, Dean of School of Life Sciences in NEHU-Shillong, said NEIAH is the first institute in the region to have both homoeopathy and ayurveda.He stressed on the need for developing geriatric medicine by bringing the three medical disciplines into this and how AYUSH can play an important role in this. Two eminent homoeopathic physicians from the North East, Dr. Shngainlang Bamon and Dr. Paresh Sharma, were felicitated for their contribution to the field of medicine. Among the dignitaries were Prof. P. Bhattacharya, director of NEIGRIHMS, and Prof. Neeraj Gupta of Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, New Delhi.

Contractor found ammunition in his car
SHILLONG: A pouch containing bullets was found from the bonnet of a well known contractor’s car in Tura. On April 7 night, Eisenhar K Sangma found an ammunition pouch containing twenty numbers of bullets lying on the bonnet of his car, which was parked in his compound at Dakopgre. Police said that the case is being registered and the matter is under investigation adding, “It is too premature to say as who may be behind keeping the bullets pouch inside the vehicle.”
