TURA/SHILLONG: Tura Lok Sabha member Conrad K Sangma has shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking deferral of the centre’s Digital India Day celebration as the event falls on Good Friday, the biggest Christian observance.
In his letter to the prime Minister the Tura MP wrote, “It is learnt that Digital India Day this year falls on Good Friday. I express my best wishes for the celebration of Digital India Day but with deepest and sincere concern of the Christian community. I suggest you to kindly defer Digital India Day so that the secular fabric of India remains honoured.”
The Christian community in the North East and rest of mainland India has expressed concern over the Centre’s move to hold the event on Good Friday which happens to be the biggest religious observance in the Christian calendar.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has also come out in opposition to the celebration of Digital India Day on Good Friday and has made it clear that the State government would not be a part of it.
Independent legislator John Leslee K. Sangma has also opposed the observation of Digital India Day on Good Friday and has urged Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to take steps to stop the violation of the rights of Christians.
He has extended his support to the chief minister’s opposition to Digital India Day celebration on Good Friday.
