SHILLONG: Relenting to growing pressure from the Northeastern states, especially from Meghalaya, to defer the observation of Digital India Day since it coincides with Good Friday, the Niti Aayog on Thursday permitted Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland to hold Digi Dhan Mela on any other date convenient to the states.
Chief Executive Officer of the Niti Aayog, Amitabh Kant, in an urgent communication to State Chief Secretary KS Kropha said the Digi Dhan Melas may be held on any other date convenient to the governments of the three states.
The communication said that the decision was taken after it was learnt that on account of Good Friday, state governments are facing an issue about organizing Digi Dhan Melas on April 14.
The State Government, too, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday.
Earlier while addressing a press conference here on Thursday, BJP Jharkhand president and MP Laxman Gilua, allayed concerns raised by the Christian communities in Meghalaya by informing that a request has been made and the centre is working to change the date of observing digital day in Meghalaya which coincides with Good Friday.
He said that the party would take care of all the communities as the agenda of the party is “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas”.
Stating that the controversy over the observation of Digital India Day on April 14 is a propaganda of some political parties, he said that the agenda of BJP is not to hurt anyone.
When asked about the observation of Good Governance on December 25 which also created a controversy, he said that the day was observed to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and as Meghalaya had issues with the date the observation has been preponed in the State.
BJP Meghalaya Spokesperson Basu Chakraborty hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for deferring the date for organising Digi Dhan Mela.
He also assured that the BJP is a party with a difference which honours the religious sentiments of every section of the society and works on the doctrine of “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” with pro-active involvement of all without discrimination to anybody on any ground.
He also slammed Chief Minister Mukul Sangma saying the chief minister and the likes in the Congress party are ever ready to exploit the religious sentiments of people of the State. The Congress leaders can stoop low beyond imagination to gain political mileage, he said.
“They do so with the malafide intention of diverting people’s attention away from their misrule and rampant corruption,” Basu added.
