SHILLONG: Over 32,000 people were affected and two persons lost their lives in the recent cyclone coupled with rainfall and hailstones that hit parts of Meghalaya.
According to official data, the number of villages affected is 446 and that of damaged houses is 8,243.
Additional Chief Secretary in charge, P.W Ingty, said Rs 20 lakh was given to each deputy commissioner for immediate release of the money as per requirements.
The government released Rs 2.20 crore for relief.
According to the data, in West Jaintia Hills, 420 people in 85 villages were affected. Also, 13 houses were damaged and 13 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed.
In South Garo Hills, 685 persons in nine villages were affected. The houses damaged were 119.
The number of people affected in Ri Bhoi is the highest at 9,313 in 30 villages. As many as 2,704 houses were destroyed and the damage to public property is one.
In South West Khasi Hills, 1,429 houses in 42 villages were damaged affecting 210. Earlier, two relief camps with 18 households were opened.
In West Garo Hills, 2,951 people in 86 villages were affected. As many as 601 houses were damaged. Two schools and one anganwadi centre were also damaged. Three relief camps were initially opened.
As many as 49 houses were affected and 1,132 houses damaged in East Khasi Hills and the number of people affected in the district is 5,685. Besides, three schools were also damaged.
In Mawsynram, the death of father-daughter duo was reported after a tree fell on the house.
In East Garo Hills, 25 hectares of agricultural land were affected and six schools were damaged. As many as 595 houses were damaged and 1,928 people in 30 villages were affected in the district.
In East Jaintia Hills, 1,500 people were affected while 308 houses and two schools were damaged.
In West Khasi Hills, 160 households in 28 villages were affected. Three schools were damaged 6 ha of agriculture land was also affected.
In North Garo Hills, the number of people affected in all the 40 villages is 8,360. As many as 1,198 houses were also damaged and one person was injured by lightning.
There was no damage reported from Betasing block of South West Garo Hills whereas in Zikzak, 13 people were affected and three houses were damaged.
