SHILLONG/NEW DELHI: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is reportedly backing Odisha Governor S.C Jamir as its vice-presidential nominee.
A national news portal quoted senior RSS pracharak Jagdamba Mall as saying that if Jamir, a senior Congressman from Nagaland, is elected to the post, he would be the first vice president from the North East.
When contacted, Mall, who is in the city, said he has no knowledge of such move and he “does not have any idea how some news agencies quoted him on the issue”.
When asked about the development, Jamir too denied the reports. On insisting, he said, “I am still the Governor of Odisha.”
Though BJP has not officially named its candidate for the post of vice president, Ram Madhav, party national secretary in charge of the North East, had in a tweet hinted at the possibility of Jamir becoming the VP. He had tweeted after a meeting with Jamir in Bhubaneswar on April 16.
