TURA: A suspected Bangladeshi national who allegedly entered a village in Dalu area of West Garo Hills has died after being assaulted by villagers on Tuesday night.
The victim reportedly crossed the international border illegally and was spotted by villagers a little past midnight. He was caught and assaulted after he failed to prove his identity.
He was found by police lying in an unconscious state near Dapgre village and taken to Dalu health centre for treatment the same night.
On Wednesday morning he was brought to Tura civil hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries late in the afternoon.
“The victim aged around 50 years was unconscious when our police team found him around Dapgre village and took him to hospital. He is suspected to be a Bangladeshi national and we are trying to identify him,” said district police chief M G R Kumar.
Although the border is manned by the BSF troops of the Meghalaya frontier, vast stretches in the Garo Hills region remain vulnerable to infiltration from the neighbouring country.
