Abattoir trial run from today

SHILLONG: The dry run for the much-awaited abattoir at Iew Mawiong on the outskirts of Shillong will begin on Friday and the abattoir will start functioning soon.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Thursday, B. Rijal, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, said 15 butchers will get training in Guwahati from May 3.
“For now only cattle and pig butchers have come forward for the training,” he said and added that officials from the project implementing company will visit Shillong to train butchers in operating the machines.
The government has also directed the department to call expressions of interest from bidders to operate the abattoir, which was built at a cost of Rs 22 crore by Rapsang Group of Companies, Shillong, in collaboration with Real Growth Company, Chennai. The plan is to slaughter 240 cows, 160 each pigs and goats daily.
The abattoir will end open slaughter of animals and ensure safe and hygienic meat. There will be effluent treatment plants for pollution control.The government is planning similar abattoirs in Tura and Jowai.
