BJP Pynursla to suggest 2018 poll candidate
SHILLONG: The BJP Pynursla Mandal will suggest the name of its candidate from Pynursla constituency for the 2018 Assembly elections.This was decided by the local committee in a meeting on Friday, said Mandal secretary Treilang Khonglam.However, the Mandal refused to disclose the candidate’s name.
Peer team of NAAC to visit college in WJH
Shillong: The Peer Team Visit (PTV) of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) an Autonomous Institution of the University Grant Commission, Bengaluru will visit Nongtalang College, West Jaintia Hills on May 2 and 3. The team includes Prof A P Padhi (Former VC, Berhampur University, Shantinagar) Chairperson along with Dr. K. K. Seethamma (Registrar i/c Bangalore University) Member Co -ordinator and Dr. P. Shekhar (Principal Guru Nanak College, Dhanbad) Member.
Awareness on cleanliness, early marriage
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) South West Khasi Hills organised a programme on Friday at Dangar to create awareness on cleanliness, drug abuse, alcoholism and early marriage.Khlain Kharbyngngar of the Voluntary Health Association of Meghalaya said the rise in addiction and alcoholism and child marriage is alarming.Among others at the programme were HYC vice president Donboklang Kharlyngdoh and headmen of Dangar and Balat, S. Syiemlieh and Kloilan Khardewsaw. School students were among the audience.
Awareness for Tura senior citizens
TURA: An awareness programme on the rights of senior citizens was organised for the first time in West Garo Hills on Friday. The programme, held at the Office Chamber of District and Sessions Judge, focused on the provisions under the NALSA (National Legal Service Authority) (Legal Services to Senior Citizens) Scheme, 2016. W.G Momin, president of Senior Citizens Forum Tura, raised concerns over various issues and called for frequent awareness programmes.
Students’ body wants central univ in GH, writes to PM
TURA: The A’chik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the need for having a central university in Garo Hills. ASWA General Secretary Harley Davidson N. Sangma pointed out that the North Eastern Hills University, which offers a few courses, is not enough and that students are forced to travel to different places outside Garo Hills to pursue higher studies.“If Delhi and Uttar Pradesh can have five central universities each and Assam two, why can’t we have two or more universities in Meghalaya,” said the memorandum sent to Modi. The students’ body pointed out that though there are many private universities, not many students can afford the expenses. ASWA has sent a copy of the memorandum to the Minister of Human Resource Development and will forward copies of the same to Tura MP Conrad K Sangma and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
GHADC body elects new leaders
TURA: Elections to the posts of president and general secretary of the Non-Gazetted Employees Association (NGEA) in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) was conducted on Thursday.The election conducted through ballot vote elected Toesik Itseng S. Sangma as president and Christ Jenny Ch Marak as general secretary with 377 and 331 votes, respectively. The election was necessitated following the resignation of the previous executive body leading to an interim body taking charge, which was also dissolved.The Council, whose employees have not got salary for over 10 months now, is being administered directly by the State Government through the deputy commissioner of South West Garo Hills, C.V.D Diengdoh.
Fifth pay panel visits Nongstoin
NONGSTOIN: The Chairman of Meghalaya Fifth Pay Commission along with other members visited Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills with a purpose to interact with the officials.All the district heads of West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Mairang, Civil Sub-Division including representatives of service associations, groups and individuals attended the meeting. Queries and hearings were also sought by the officials and staff from various line departments and the Commission noted each point that was raised before it.
Stolen bike recovered, 2 arrested
TURA: Tura police with the help of technology have recovered a motorcycle that had been stolen and arrested two persons in connection with the crime on Friday.The traffic branch of Tura police that was tracking vehicular movement with the help of close circuit television (CCTV) screen spotted two persons on a bike having registration of a stolen two wheeler.A mobile police team intercepted them and on inspection it was found that the Yamaha FZ-16 bike (black) bearing number ML08 B 3666 had already been registered as stolen. The two accused, Rahul A Sangma (18) and Pankash Rishi (18) of Rishipara Tura were placed under arrest and taken in for questioning.There has been a spate of car and motorcycle thefts in Tura and several other town of Garo Hills since the last couple of years with little or no headway being made into these crimes. While two-wheeler motorcycles such as the high end Yamaha FZs, Bajaj Discoverers and Pulsars have been the target of gangs for its high demand and value outside the state and in the neighbouring country of Bangladesh.Mahindra Boleros and Scorpios are reportedly sold for a premium in the border states of Nagaland and Manipur.
